The CYRUS CYLINDER

The First Declaration of Human Rights

The Cyrus Cylinder is an ancient clay cylinder, now broken into several fragments, on which is written a declaration in Akkadian cuneiform script. It is a 2600-year old object of modern importance, and a symbol of multi-culturalism, tolerance, diversity, and human rights. The Cylinder visited the US for the first time in 2013 through a national tour officially sponsored by the Iran Heritage Foundation. Additionally, the cylinder could be concidered as the first attempt about running a society, a state with different nationalities and faiths—a new kind of statecraft.

Cyrus The Great, on this cylinder, describes how he conquers the old city of Babylon and how his mighty army in peace marched into the city.
